Taekwondo Belt Requirements

Tuesday, August 9, 2011 , Posted by Unknown at 9:31 PM

The requirements which you must do before you can be promoted to a higher belt at Champion Taekwondo Center Inc.are shown here and are posted and available at the school. Keep in mind that these are minimum requirements. Promotion greatly depends on your technique. The instructors will let you know when they feel you are ready for testing. Periodically, the instructor checks to see if you know the requirements for the next belt. If you know the requirements, students may receive tapes on their belt. One tape is for Poomse (forms), and one tape is for Kicks (sparring combinations). Be sure you know all your old and new Poomse and kicks before you test. It is the student's responsibility to know the required material. When testing for your belt, be sure to fill out a testing application prior to the test, wear your full uniform, and bring your sparring gear to the test.

Five Goals of Taekwondo

Respect

This is one of the most important aspects of Taekwondo. It is also the most noticeable. You show respect for others by treating them as you would like to be treated yourself. The most obvious manner in which we show our respect in Taekwondo is by bowing and addressing people as "Sir" or "Ma'am."

Humility

While we should all be proud of ourselves, having too much pride is inappropriate. You should not boast too much about your talents and accomplishments. Whether you are a Black Belt or a new white belt, a national champion or a last-place competitor, a high paid executive or a first time employee, you should treat all people fairly.

Perseverance

Perseverance is "sticking with it" and not giving up even when it would be easier to quit.

Self-Control

Being a good Taekwondo student and becoming a Black Belt is not easy. You are the only one who can make yourself do the things necessary to be successful. Through concentration and effort, you will accomplish your goals.

Honesty

You should not only be honest to others by telling the truth, but you should be honest with yourself as well. You will find that if you are honest with yourself, being honest to others comes naturally. The dedicated Taekwondo practitioner makes these goals a part of their life. Even if someone's martial arts skills are very good, if they do not practice and strive for these goals, they will never be a true Black Belt.

Being A Black Belt

The goal of every Taekwondo student is to become a Black Belt. This is because being a Black Belt is something very special. Only one out of at least 100 students who start Taekwondo stay with it to earn their Black Belt. Through dedication and effort, the Black Belt has mastered many of the techniques of Taekwondo. One is able to defend themselves and has become very strong- both physically and mentally. However, just like there is much more to Taekwondo than punching and kicking, there is much more to being a Black Belt than being good at punching and kicking.
Wearing the Black Belt means the wearer has dedicated a substantial amount of time and effort directed towards a specific goal. The Black Belt proves you have met your goal.
Becoming a Black Belt is certainly a great honor, but with it comes much responsibility. When you become a Black Belt, the reputation of your Taekwondo Instructor, your school, the art, and, most importantly, yourself, all depend on your good behavior. Other people, in your school and outside of the Taekwondo school, will think of you as a very important person. You will have accomplished something great, and people will try to copy your behavior. Accordingly, you must act in a responsible and respectable manner at all times.
This means that you must do what you think is right or best all the time. You must not be swayed by others who would have you do otherwise. You must set an example for other students in your Taekwondo school by doing your best 100% of the time. You must treat everybody with dignity and respect, and you will find that you will gain their respect in return.
To wear the revered Black Belt, you must do your best and be your best because you are a winner and a leader!!!
Poomse
Forms, or "poomse" in Korean, are a series of defending and attacking movements performed against imaginary opponents in a set pattern. Through the practice of forms, students learn the applications of the various Taekwondo techniques. The movements of each form have been carefully arranged by the Grandmasters to teach students effective methods for dealing with a variety of attacks from all possible directions, with particular emphasis placed on equal development of both sides of the body.Poomse (Forms) are judged on the following:
1.  Correct & orderly execution of each movement.
2.  Beginning & ending in the same spot.
3.  Executing powerful & speedy techniques by tensing & relaxing muscles at the proper time.
4.  Mental concentration.
5.  Focused eye & head movements.
6.  Accurate targets.
7.  Inhaling & exhaling at the proper moment.
8.  Balance.
9.  Rhythm.
10. Synchronization of all body movements.
11. Taekwondoistic attitude.
Vital Points (Keupsoh)
  • The front of the head
  • The front of the body
  • The back of the body
The vital points of the body are listed below. A vital point is a part of the body that, when attacked in the right way (force, angle, accuracy), can cause paralysis, unconsciousness or even death. Attacks to nerves can lead to nausea, headaches or worse.
This information should only be used to increase your knowledge of the body and of Taekwondo, it is not meant to be used without the supervision of a qualified instructor.
The impact on vital points is indicated by numbers as followed:
  1. Moderate pain
  2. Sharp pain
  3. Severe pain
  4. Unconsciousness or temporary paralysis
  5. Fatal
The body has about 280 vital points so this list is far from complete.
