AT&T offering Web site for free online video

Dallas-based AT&T Inc. is joining the cable industry battle to control the future of online video.

The company just announced a new Web site – www.entertainment.att.net – that lets anyone in the U.S. watch free streaming movies and TV shows.

The AT&T Entertainment site is part of the industrywide push to make online video convenient for users, but also to establish a profitable model quickly to avoid the fate of the beleaguered music business.

While other providers have locked down their online videos so that only subscribers to their TV and Internet services can watch them, AT&T is allowing anyone with a speedy Internet connection to log on and tune in.

"Right now, we're just happy to be able to offer it as is, regardless of whether they're a paying TV subscriber or not," said spokeswoman Sarah Andreani.

Subscribers to AT&T's U-verse cable TV and Internet service will be able to use the site to manage and schedule recordings on their AT&T digital video recorders, though that feature was already available on att.net.

One of AT&T's partners in the new venture is the free online video service Hulu.com, so many of the videos on AT&T's site are Hulu videos.

But AT&T also has content from providers not on Hulu, such as CBS and MTV.

Like Hulu, AT&T Entertainment generates revenue from short commercials that run with its videos.

Cable providers such as Comcast Corp., Time Warner Cable and Verizon Communications Inc. are testing different technologies that let subscribers watch online the shows and movies they're already paying for as part of their traditional cable service. Comcast also has its free-to-all Fancast.com online video service.

Analysts have said the subscribers-only model will probably win out in the end, because requiring a login makes it easier to track viewing trends and target ads to individual users.

GoPhone Pay As You Go is San Antonio-based AT&T's (NYSE: T) add-on package options. GoPhone from AT&T will offer customers a chance to order 3,000 Night & Weekend minutes for $19.99 a month, 200 text, IM, picture or video messages for $4.99 and 5 MB of data at $9.99.

AT&T officials say any unused units will roll over and extend to a new expiration date if the subscriber renews before the end of the 30-day service period. The company's Pay As You Go plan allows customersto order wireless service without an annual contract or credit check. Customers pay their bills month-to-month.

AT&T has more than 62 million wireless customers across the United States. The company's operations consist of the former Cingular Wireless.
